U.N. DESIGNATION
A Clarification.
Some of the news coverage needs clarification about Derry-Londonderry’s designation as an International City of Peace being backed by the U.N. That is incorrect. Since 2017, International Cities of Peace is in Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC, the U.N. body for NGOs. There is an initiative in Derry that is hopeful of U.N. backing, but we are not associated with that at this time. At no time did J. Frederick Arment, who spoke at the event on September 21, 2023, mention the United Nations or allude to the initiative in Derry-Londonderry as having U.N. backing or designation. This clarification needed to be done to ensure that ECOSOC knows that International Cities of Peace respects the limitations and benefit of Special Consultive Status.
